2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship Bracket Announced

(Indianapolis, IN. - May 28, 2007) The field of 64 teams competing for the 2007 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship was announced today by the NCAA.

The national top eight seeds are Vanderbilt (51-11), Rice (49-12), North Carolina (48-12), Texas (44-15), Arizona St. (43-13), Florida St. (47-11), Arkansas (41-19), San Diego (43-16).

The Atlantic Coast Conference leads all conferences in the number of teams in the championship field with seven, followed by the Big 12 with six. The Southeastern Conference has five teams, while the Big West, Conference USA and Pacific-10 has four teams each.

Twenty-nine of the 64 teams were not in the field last year, including Albany (N.Y.) (AQ), Brown (AQ) and Wofford (AQ), making the championship for the first time. Lafayette last was in the field in 1990, while Memphis is in the field for the first time since 1994 and Sam Houston St.’s last appearance was 1996.

Miami (Fla.) is in the field for the 35th consecutive year, extending its own record. Florida St. is making its 30th straight appearance, second all-time. Other long consecutive streaks: Clemson (21), Cal St. Fullerton (16), Rice (13) and Oral Roberts (10).

Of the 283 championship eligible Division I institutions which sponsor baseball, Vanderbilt has the most Division I wins with 51. Twenty-six other teams won at least 40 Division I contests and all are in the field.

Each of the 16 regionals features four teams, playing a double-elimination format. The regionals are scheduled to be conducted from Friday, June 1, to Monday, June 4. Selection of the eight super regional hosts will be announced on www.NCAASports.com, Monday, June 4 at approximately 11 p.m. (ET).

The 61st Men’s College World Series begins play Friday, June 15, at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska.
