The NCAA strives to maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a voluntary organization of colleges and universities devoted to the development of young men and women as students and athletes. The NCAA offers 88 championships in 23 different sports; approximately 380,000 student-athletes participate annually in NCAA-sponsored sports. The NCAA provides an administrative structure for its 1,281 members in Divisions I, II, and III who are joined in their belief that athletics programs are an integral part of their educational mission.

Founded in 1906, the NCAA has grown dramatically in the past 50 years, with more than 600 new members since 1950.  Today, the NCAA is a multifaceted organization. The NCAA:

• Promotes intercollegiate athletics through publications and special television programs.

• Administers insurance programs to cover student-athletes during competitions and travel.
  
• Promotes and participates in international sports planning and competition.
