Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole
(opening statement): “I knew this was a good baseball team when we beat
Long Beach at Long Beach. We could have ended the season there. That
was good enough right there. As a coaching staff we got out of the way,
and the eight seniors took charge. They decided to do things right
both on and off the field.”
(about the pitching staff): “When I saw how unselfish this team
is, everyone wanted the ball every time. These guys wanted the ball and
took it. We have not left anywhere for the last five weekends without
being on empty.”

Georgia Head Coach Dave Perno (opening statement): “We got everything we wanted out of the gate and got off to a quick start. We had a tough time defending the post pattern across the middle. It was uncharacteristic of Nick and Stephen. We mismanaged the third inning. It was my bad, but hopefully we pick it up tomorrow.”
(on trying to win the national championship in two games): “It’s easier. It’s like game seven. This is everything. There’s no other team I’d rather have in the dugout than this team.”
(on pulling Massanari): “It was a combination of the score and not bringing the energy. I felt like it was time to make a move.”
(on tomorrow’s pitchers): You’re going to see Moreau, Weaver, McRee and Fields. Everyone else is cheerleading. Those are the guys who got us here and this is for all the marbles.”

Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole
(opening statement): “That was a good college baseball game there. I
think if you told me we’d hold that offense to seven with the arms we
had, I’d take it. Give them a lot of credit. I knew with the arms we
had, we wouldn’t strike out many, but I thought we’d have more
strikeouts than one. Give them credit. They did a good job.
(about Brandon Burke pitching in the 8th inning): “He made some
good pitches. He battled them with two strikes. One thing I didn’t like
was the walk after the home run.”
(about whether his team is fatigued): “We’re fine. I think we could play another nine. We feel good.”
(about Georgia having more rest than Fresno): “They had their
No. 1 pitcher ready to go. Somehow we’ll piece it together tomorrow. At
least four of these guys (who pitched for Fresno) will throw again
tomorrow. But Georgia credit. They earned this position.”

Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole (opening statement):
“That was a gutsy performance when we needed it the most. It was a
mental battle for (Clayton) Allison, and he won it. The infielders made
smart decisions and all three pitchers were locked in and located their
pitches.” North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox (opening statement): “It’s
not ever fun. Actually worse no matter where you are, but especially
here. We’ll choose to focus on the seniors and what they’ve done. We
didn’t have a lot of things go right for us. Fresno State did, and they
had a lot to do with it.”

Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole "That was an extremely well played game on both
ends. Both teams threw big pitches when they needed them and there was
just enough offense to make it a good baseball game. I was proud of our
guys and how they all came out attacking. We’ve won two so tonight
didn’t hurt us. We just have to go out and take care of business
tomorrow."
North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox "Wow. I really don’t know what to say. Our
pitching was the story of the game. Matt (Harvey) gave us exactly what
we needed. We were a split second from getting a double play in the
first inning. I think Alex (White) has found a new role for us. I
keep thinking we’re dreaming, but we’re happy to be here for another
day."

Georgia Head Coach Dave Perno "Today was about getting our offense going and
getting those clutch hits early. We have come through a really tough
bracket with some of the top teams and I’m proud of our guys for
hanging in there and making it through." Stanford Head Coach Mark Marquess "First of all I’d like to congratulate Georgia. They’re a great team. They were too much for us today. We couldn’t
stop them. We played them twice here, and they’re a better team than
we are. As far as our team is concerned, I’m very proud of this team.
We surprised a lot of people, including me. This (College World
Series) is a great experience for all of us, not only the coaches, but
most importantly the student-athletes. I’m proud of how we completed.
This game belongs to a stronger team in Georgia."

North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox
(opening statement): “I’d like to congratulate Paul and LSU on a
terrific season. They’re a great team. We were fortunate to beat them
twice. Their two pitchers were outstanding. We just hung around. We
ran our best five guys out there. You saw why we think Dustin Ackley
is one of the best players in America. My team has a lot of heart. We
finally hit a mistake. They didn’t make many of them. We’re happy to
still be playing.”
(About UNC’s success with Dustin Ackley being on base): “You saw that
tonight. He’s a table setter for us. That’s why we’ve had him in the
leadoff spot three fourths of the season. It helps us.”

Miami (Fla.) Head Coach Jim Morris
(opening statement): “First of all, congratulations to Stanford. They
outplayed us tonight in every part of the game. They got it done. I’m
proud of this team. They have the best team record since I’ve been at
Miami. They worked hard, played with a common goal to get to Omaha.
They’ll always be Hurricanes.”
(on whether it felt like the players were settling in): “I have
to credit their [Stanford] pitching. We had opportunities with one or
two outs and guys on base and didn’t get it in. We are an explosive
club and we expect to get it done. In the eighth or ninth we had a good
try to come back.”

North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox
(opening statement): “Fresno State certainly outplayed us, outexecuted
us. I like the way they played. For a depleted pitching staff, they
did well. Hats off to Fresno State. We’ll regroup and try again
Thursday. I wouldn’t describe them (Fresno State) as playing with
nothing to lose. Everybody is equal once you get here. They did what
they needed to do to win. The score could’ve been worse. Credit our
guys for keeping it close.” Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole
(opening statement): “I’m extremely proud of our seniors. This is an
older group, and these eight guys have been doing right for a long time
and making sure others do right too.”

Rice Head Coach Wayne Graham
(opening statement): “If you’re gonna play this game, you’re gonna be
on the other side. It’s going to be tough. We gave it our best shot.
You have to give credit LSU for fighting back. It was a great effort
for them to come from behind like that.”
LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri
(opening statement): “For us, what a monumental win. We’ve had a lot of
games that looked like they were lost, but our kids keep battling until
the end.”

Stanford Head Coach Mark Marquess
(opening statement): “It was a great game. We had a chance to win it. I was very impressed with them (Georgia). They pitched well and really silenced our bats. It was a tough loss for us, but congratulations to Georgia.”
(about Jason Castro offensive production): “He’s having a great tournament and a great year for us. He leads our team in average and RBI. He’s played well in the first two games for us, but he’s done it all year for us.”
(about the task at hand – coming back through the loser’s bracket): “It’s a huge advantage to win this winner’s game because you sit for three days. You just take it game-by-game. If you look at how difficult it is to come back, it becomes impossible. Especially after this season the number of games isn’t going to bother us.”

Florida State Head Coach Mike Martin (opening statement):
“If you’d told me before the game that we’d have 18 hits and no errors,
I would have taken my chances. I give a lot of credit to Miami, they
pitched well, played an outstanding game and they deserved to win.”
“This was one of the best years of my career to coach. They all competed well and competed hard all year.”
(about
his team’s ninth-inning rally and Buster Posey’s final at-bat): “That
was a display we’ve seen more than once this season, when guys keep
battling and putting together excellent at-bats. The kind of team we
were was on display in Buster’s last at-bat. That (at-bat) shows what
he is all about – some guys would want to be the hero, but Buster put
together a great at-bat and turned it over to the next guy, who had hit
the ball hard all day. Jamile (Weeks) made a nice play to end the game.
That inning was a credit to our young men.”

LSU Head Coach Paul Mainieri (opening statement): “It was a
frustrating game for us. We got off to a great start with the leadoff
home run in the first. (Jason) Verdugo was throwing well in the bottom
of the first – a guy was safe on a swinging bunt, a good piece of
hitting on a single the other way, a tough play on a grounder – all of
a sudden the bases were loaded with nobody out, and I felt like our guy
was throwing well. It was a series of tough breaks for us, and we got
in a hole.” North Carolina Head Coach Mike Fox (opening statement): “It’s
always good to get the first win here. Any win here is a good win, but
the first win is important. I think the game was typical of our team –
a team effort. We singled them to death. Things didn’t start well for
Alex (White) but you got tsee how much he’s improved from last year. It
was a total team effort. We’re certainly happy with the win.”

Fresno State Head Coach Mike Batesole (opening statement): “We played aggressive today. The last thing we wanted to do was to sit back and let the game come to us. Justin (Wilson) pitched great and threw strikes. It was a great battle. We didn’t give any at-bats away, and that’s what it will take to keep this going. There’s a good chance we’ll see Rice and maybe even Ryan Berry again during this tournament.” Rice Head Coach Wayne Graham (opening statement): “It was not exactly what we hoped for. Fresno State did an incredible job hitting the ball. It’s hard to hit the ball that hard in batting practice.”

Georgia Head Coach David Perno (Opening statement): “That was the toughest game we’ve been in all year. Our kids fought like there was no tomorrow, kept battling and hanging in there and got it done in the end like they needed to. We’ve been able to deliver the big inning when we’ve needed to all year.” Miami (Fla.) Head Coach Jim Morris (opening statement): “First of all I’d like to congratulate Georgia. They’re a great club and did a great job coming back and battling. We need to swing the bat better with runners in scoring position. We had our backs against the wall last weekend vs. Arizona. We have to do the same thing again now.”
