OMAHA, Neb. – Fresno State scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning, but Georgia answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for a 7-6 victory in game one of the 2008 MCWS Championship Finals. The win puts Georgia (44-23-1) just one win away from its second national championship and its first since 1990. Fresno State falls to 45-31 and now must win each of the last two games of the Championship Finals to win the national title. In the bottom of the eighth, with Georgia trailing 6-3, Matt Olson led off with a single and scored on Gordon Beckham’s 27th home run of the season to make the score 6-5. After Rich Poythress walked, Matt Cerione doubled to drive in Poythress and tied the game. A double by Joey Lewis drove home Cerione and gave Georgia the lead. Josh Fields then entered the game in the ninth and retired all three men he faced for his 18th save of the season. A leadoff double by Ryan Peisel in the bottom of the first was followed by a two-out single by Rich Poythress to give Georgia a 1-0 lead. Fresno State tied the game in the third on Jordan Ribera’s leadoff home run but Georgia added another run in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out single by Bryce Massanari was followed by a walk and a single by Joey Lewis drove in Massanari. Fresno State grabbed its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Ryan Overland drew a walk to lead off the inning and Steve Detwiler then belted his 10th home run of the season to give Fresno State a 3-2 lead. Matt Cerione’s RBI single in the sixth tied the game for Georgia but Fresno State seemed to take control with three runs in the eighth. After Erik Wetzel walked to lead off the inning, Steve Susdorf doubled to score Wetzel and regained the lead for Fresno. After a double play, Tommy Mendonca hit a solo home run to stretch the lead to 5-3. Ryan Overland was then hit by a pitch and Detwiler doubled for his second RBI of the game to make it 6-3.
