OMAHA, Neb. – Chad Flack’s dramatic two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning turned a one-run deficit into a one-run victory as the second-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels picked up a 4-3 win over Fresno State Saturday to stay alive in the 2008 Men’s College World Series. The Tar Heels forced a decisive game against Fresno State Sunday at 6 p.m. (Central). The winner of Sunday’s Fresno State/North Carolina game will advance to face Georgia in the MCWS Championship Finals beginning Monday at 6 p.m. (Central). After Kyle Seager led off the eighth inning with a double into right center, Flack, who appeared to be sacrificing earlier in the at-bat, belted a 3-2 pitch deep into the left field bleachers to give North Carolina its first lead of the game. The home run gave North Carolina hurler Alex White an MCWS record-tying third win of the 2008 Series. White entered the game in the seventh and retired all eight men he faced with five strikeouts. For Fresno State, a walk, a fielder’s choice and two singles to start the game led to a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs added to their lead in the fourth when Tommy Mendonca belted a two-out, two-run homer to make it 3-0. North Carolina cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Flack doubled and Garrett Gore singled to put runners at first and third. A single by Seth Williams plated Flack and, after a walk loaded the bases, Dustin Ackley grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Gore. Fresno State missed a golden opportunity to add to its lead in the seventh. A one-out double by Steve Detwiler was followed by a pair of walks to load the bases. But White entered the game in relief and struck out both men he faced in the inning to end the threat and keep the Tar Heels within a run.
