For the second straight game at the 2008 Men’s College World Series a ninth-inning outburst propelled a team to victory as eight-seeded Georgia scored four runs in the top of the ninth to clinch a 7-4 victory over Miami (Fla.), Saturday night. Leading 4-3 with a runner at second base and one out, Miami pitcher Carlos Gutierrez struck out Georgia’s Robbie O’Bryan but the pitch got away from catcher Yasmani Grandal. The wild pitch allowed O’Bryan to reach and put runners on first and third with one out. Lyle Allen then singled through the left side to tie the game at 4-4. Gutierrez then got David Thoms to ground back to the mound but Gutierrez’s throw to first was wide and rolled into right field allowing two runs to score and sending Thoms to third. Georgia 3B Ryan Peisel’s single over the drawn in infield drove in Thoms and capped the four-run ninth. Peisel was 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI for Georgia and DH Joey Lewis was 2-for-2 with a double. On the mound, the Bulldogs got five innings of three-hit relief from three relievers. Alex McRee, Dean Weaver and Josh Fields combined for five innings, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out five. The win moved Georgia to 42-23-1 and dropped Miami to 52-10. Miami now moves into Monday’s elimination game against fourth-seeded Florida State at 1 p.m. (Central) while Georgia moves into the winners’ bracket to face Stanford at 6 p.m. (Central) on Monday. Miami 2B Jemile Weeks started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. In the top of the third inning, Georgia tied the game when Lewis led off with a double, then scored two batters later on Peisel’s two-out RBI single. Miami regained the lead in the bottom of the third when CF Blake Tekotte drilled a two-run home run. But the Hurricanes failed to take advantage of another scoring opportunity later in the inning. After two walks put runners on with no one out, Georgia starter Trevor Holder got out of the jam by striking out Mark Sobolewski and Dennis Raben and getting Ryan Jackson to line to left field. Georgia tied the game again in the sixth. After an infield single by Miles Starr, Peisel got his second and third RBI of the game when he drove a pitch deep into the left field bleachers to tie the game. |
