Fresno State jumped out to an 11-0 lead through four innings and never looked back in a 17-5 victory over Rice in the first game of day two of the 2008 Men’s College World Series, Sunday. The victory moved the Bulldogs to 43-29. Fresno State also advances to the winners’ bracket game Tuesday night at 6 p.m. (Central) against the winner of Sunday’s second game between second-seeded North Carolina and seventh-seeded LSU. Rice (47-14) will play Tuesday at 1 p.m. (Central) against the loser of the North Carolina/LSU contest. Fresno State used three big innings to seal the victory. The Bulldogs had a four-run second inning, a seven-run fourth inning and a five-run sixth inning then added a single run in eighth to cap the scoring. A second-inning error helped Fresno State get the scoring started in the second. After a pair of walks put runners on first and second with one out when Bulldog RF Steve Detwiler’s grounder was not handled by Rice 2B Jimmy Comerota. Rice starter Ryan Berry then struck out Fresno State DH Jordan Ribera before SS Danny Muno’s single drove in a pair and Gavin Hedstrom’s double cleared the bases to give the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead. Fresno State essentially put the game away in the fourth inning. Muno’s one-out, three-run home run into right field made the score 7-0. After a walk, Erik Wetzel’s double scored one to make it 8-0. A hit batsman put a pair of runners on for Alan Ahmady who capped the scoring with the Bulldogs’ second home run of the inning. Offensively, Muno was 2-for-5 with a career-high five RBI while Wetzel added three hits and Jordan Ribera was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Eight of the nine starters in the Fresno State lineup had a hit and all nine crossed the plate at least once. Fresno State starter Justin Wilson went seven innings and allowed just two earned runs while striking out five. |
