Blake Dean’s two-out, bases loaded double off the top of the left field wall capped a four-run ninth inning and gave seventh-seeded LSU a 6-5 elimination game victory over sixth-seeded Rice Tuesday at the Men’s College Series. The four-run ninth inning also capped six unanswered runs by the Tigers (49-18-1) who trailed 5-0 and had just four hits going into the bottom of the seventh inning. LSU advances to play another elimination game on Thursday at 6 p.m. (Central) against the loser of tonight’s winners’ bracket contest between Fresno State and North Carolina. Rice’s season ends at 47-15. In the ninth, Rice reliever Cole St. Clair got the first out of the inning before Derek Helenihi singled to start the rally and pinch hitter Sean Ochinko was hit by a pitch. A single by Michael Hollander loaded the bases and an error put the first run of the inning on the board before Dean’s game-winning double. Until the seventh inning, the game was dominated by the Rice pitching staff. Starter Chris Kelley went 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits. In the bottom of the seventh, however, with the Tigers trailing 5-0, a two-out balk with runners at first and third gave LSU its first run. In the eighth, Micah Gibbs lined a double into right field to drive in Jared Mitchell from first base and close the margin to 5-2 to set up the winning rally. After three-up, three-down innings by both teams in the first, Rice got the scoring started in the second. With a runner at first base and one out, Chad Mozingo doubled into left field to put runners at second and third. Rick Hague then lined a pitch into left field to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. A one-out triple by Rice CF Jared Gayhart in the fifth drove home Jordan Dodson, but the Owls could not get Gayhart home as LSU starter Jared Bradford got a strikeout and a fly out to close out the inning. Rice LF Aaron Luna added to the Owls lead with a solo home run in the sixth inning and Diego Seasturnk’s two-out, RBI single in the seventh gave Rice a 5-0 lead. |
