NCAA® 2007 Men's College World Series - Omaha, Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. – Tommy Mendonca had four RBI and Clayton Allison allowed just one run in six innings pitched as the Fresno State Bulldogs, seeded fourth in the Long Beach Regional when the NCAA Tournament began, advanced to the 2008 Men’s College World Series Championship Finals with a 6-1 victory over national number two seed North Carolina Sunday.

Mendonca finished 3-for-5 with a double to go along with the four RBI. Allison, who was the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year but had just one win when the WAC Tournament began in late May, moved his record to 4-5 on the season by allowing just six hits and three walks while striking out six.

Fresno State first got on the board in the bottom of the third inning and never fell behind.  After a single by Erik Wetzel and a double by Steve Susdorff put runners on second and third with one out, North Carolina elected to intentionally walk Alan Ahmady.  Ahmady was picked off by Tar Heel catcher Tim Federowicz but Mendonca delivered a two-out single into left field to drive in Wetzel and Susdorff and give Fresno a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, North Carolina cut into the lead.  After back-to-back hits to lead off the inning, a pair of one-out walks brought home a run to make the lead 2-1.

The Bulldogs answered again in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Jordan Ribera got a one-out single and moved to third on a throwing error by UNC reliever Brian Moran on a failed pick-off attempt. Danny Muno then drove in Ribera with a single into right field.

Fresno State added another run in the fifth when Ahmady drew a leadoff walk and scored on Mendonca’s double into left field.  The Bulldogs, however, loaded the bases with one out in the inning but failed to score any more runs as Alex White forced an inning-ending double play on the first batter he faced.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth inning and Ahmady’s RBI groundout and Mendonca’s RBI single.
