CWS, Inc., Announces Charitable Contributions for 2013
College World Series of Omaha, Inc. (CWS, Inc.), the local non-profit organizing committee that hosts the annual NCAA Division I Men's College World Series, has approved contributions of more than $82,000 to area baseball and sports organizations, according to CWS, Inc., Chairman, Jack Diesing, Jr. “This latest contribution brings the program’s overall total since 1973 to $3,829,338,” Diesing reported.
“Our partnership with the NCAA has helped CWS, Inc., continue its long-standing tradition of community involvement. CWS, Inc., is dedicated to organizations that use amateur athletics to promote teamwork and sportsmanship to the Omaha area’s youth,” Diesing acknowledged.

Major contributions this year included $25,000 to Creighton University to aide in funding the new turf on the school’s baseball practice field, and $10,000 to the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) for field maintenance at its shared field at Boys Town. Both of these locations serve as practice sites for teams competing in the CWS. “The proximity of Creighton’s practice field to TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, along with its all-weather turf and ancillary facilities, make it an ideal practice facility for participating teams during the Series,” Diesing noted. “Additionally, UNO’s shared facility at Boys Town provides another good practice field for participating teams during the Series.”

Other contributions were presented to programs throughout the metropolitan area to help pay for improvements and renovations such as batting cages, fencing, landscaping, playing field upgrades and other special needs approved by the CWS, Inc. Board of Directors. This year’s recipients include:
  • Ashland Area Foundation, where funds will pay for a batting cage surface and pitching machine;
  • Bellevue Public Schools (East High School), which will use the funds to purchase tarps, protective batting cage nets, warning track materials and screens;
  • Boys Town, where the grant money will pay for various safety-improvement projects;
  • Central Omaha Legion Baseball, which is using the money for a new batting cage structure;
  • St. Bernadette Men’s Club, which will use the money for new cement and creating fencing around the facility; and
  • Schilke-Novak Kids Sports Trust, which will use the grant money to assist with the overall cost of the new facility.

Grants are based on written application forms, which must be completed and submitted to the contributions committee of the CWS, Inc. Board of Directors. The timeframe for submitting applications is August 1 through October 1. The committee reviews all competing grant applications and submits a recommendation to the full board for approval. Groups receiving a donation will have a check mailed to them in January, allowing action on the request in time for the spring baseball and softball seasons.
