College World Series Road to Omaha SculptureOmaha. It’s a vibrant, friendly city famous for great food and fine dining, but it’s much more! Omaha’s unique blend of cosmopolitan lifestyle and midwestern charm is a rarity for cities its size.

Attractions abound. Most are world-class and many are one-of-a-kind, either way they’re always done well!

Omaha is definitely a city on the move. Downtown is getting a makeover, and the new Qwest Center, a state-of-the-art convention center and arena, is open. Greater Omaha has a central location, affordable standard of living, and 10,000 hotel rooms to suit every budget and style.

When baseball is over and it’s time to play, you will have a great time in Omaha. This is a city that loves good food and music, so you will find more than enough restaurants and clubs to choose from.

A trip to Omaha means a visit to the tropics, the South Seas, Antarctica and the plains – all in one day! Omaha is home to the world’s largest geodesic dome, indoor rain forest, the Kingdom of the Seas Aquarium, Kingdoms of the Night and Wildlife Safari Park – all found at the highly acclaimed Henry Doorly Zoo.

When it comes to shopping, Omaha is home to Nebraska Furniture Mart, the nation’s largest home furnishings store, and Borsheim’s, the world’s largest independent jewelry store. The Old Market, Omaha’s restored warehouse district, is full of unique shops, boutiquesFans at the College World Series and charming restaurants.

If your taste is in the arts, you can spend all your time on your visit to Omaha doing nothing but experiencing a rich variety of cultural offerings. Most visitors are surprised to learn that a city Omaha’s size has a number of live theatre options, one of America’s best regional symphonies, an opera company that has made its name performing world premieres, the nation’s largest community playhouse, and the nation’s largest urban artist colony.

And when in Omaha, don’t forget the Strategic Air and Space Museum, Durham Western Heritage Museum or the Joslyn Art Museum. And casino gaming is offered across the river in nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa. From Blues ‘n Zoos to Bach ‘n Rock, Omaha lives up to its reputation.
Omaha Geese Sculpture

Forbes Magazine named Omaha as one of the top 15 regions in the nation while Parenting Magazine cited Omaha as one of the top 10 cities in the nation for raising a family.

Consisting of 58 larger-than-life geese, First National Bank's Spirit of Nebraska's Wilderness is one of the largest bronze monuments in the country. The sculpture by well-known wildlife sculptor, Kent Ullberg, starts as a granite fountain where jets of water give the illusion of geese taking flight. The sculpture is located on the southeast corner of 16th & Dodge Streets in downtown Omaha.

The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, 724 S. 12th St., is the nation's largest urban artist colony. Artists from around the world compete for coveted residencies.

Omaha Community Playhouse, 6915 Cass St., is the largest community theater based on subscriptions and square footage in the U.S.Many Hollywood stars including Henry Fonda, Marlon Brando and Dorothy McGuire began their careers in Omaha.

Omaha's St. Cecilia's Cathedral, 701 N. 40th St., is one of the 10 largest cathedrals in the U.S.

The "String of Pearls" has become the unofficial name of Abbott Drive, Omaha's main connector between its downtown and Eppley Airport.

First National Bank Building First National Tower is the tallest building from Chicago to Denver. As the focus of the $300 million First National Center, it sits at the corner of 16th and Dodge Streets in the heart of downtown Omaha.

The Lied Transplant Center, located at the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus, is the first transplantation center in the world to bring together into one facility solid organ and blood stem cell(bone marrow) transplantation programs, cancer and transplantation research, patient care and education, and an innovative delivery system called Cooperative Care.

Boys Town National Research Hospital, 555 N. 30th St., is one of the world's largest facilities devoted to the study of disorders of hearing, speech, language and learning. Studies focus on the neurobiological aspects of hearing, hereditary communication disorders, and clinical and behavioral human communication.

Woodmen of the World was one of the first fraternal benefit societies in the U.S. when it was founded in Omaha back in 1890. Today,Woodmen is still one of the largest with 825,000 member belonging to 2,500 lodges throughout the United States.

Borsheim's, America's largest independent jewelry store, features a 37,000 square-foot store and international catalog business.

Omaha is Home to Five Fortune 500 Companies

ConAgra, which means "The Land," is one of the nation's largest branded food companies.

Each year, Omaha hosts the Berkshire annual meeting, when thousands of stockholders come to town to listen to the greatest stock market investor of modern times, Warren Buffett, popularly known as the Oracle of Omaha. An investment of $10,000 in Berkshire stock when Buffett bought control of it in 1965, would be worth more than $51 million today.

Founded in 1884, Peter Kiewit Sons', Inc., has grown from an Omaha masonry contracting partnership to one of the largest construction and mining companies in North America with more than 30 district and area offices across the U.S. and Canada.

In 1863, Omaha was designated by President Lincoln as the eastern terminus of the Union Pacific Railroad, which today is the largest railroad in North America, covering two-thirds of the United States. Union Pacific's Harriman Center in Omaha is considered the largest and most sophisticated computerized rail command centers in the world. Union Pacific ranked No. 1 among railroads in Fortune magazine's published list of "America's Most Admired Companies.

More than 20 insurance companies call Omaha home, including Mutual of Omaha which is known internationally for its long-running wildlife series Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Mutual of Omaha corporate headquarters was built with seven floors underground.

High-Tech Town

Omaha is the "800 Number Capital of the United States" where major information, data-processing and telecommunications companies call home. Toll-free numbers got their start during the '60s and '70s in Omaha, beginning with bank card and hotel reservation centers and followed by telecommunications firms. Among the major players in the area are:

First Data Resources (FDR), recognized as the world's leading third-party contract processor of bank card transactions, was founded in Omaha in 1971 and is one of the city's largest private sector employers with more than 7,000 employees.

ACI Worldwide, one of the world's leading developers of software applications used by financial institutions, retailers and third-party processors of electronics, is based in Omaha where it was founded in 1975. Today more than 520 customers in 71 countries use ACI supplied software.

Data Transmission Network (DTN) was started in Omaha in 1984 and has grown to become the dominant provider of agricultural market information, news and commodity quotes for producers and agribusinesses.

Ameritrade Holding Corporation, a discount brokerage headquartered in Omaha.


SITEL Corporation provides outsourced call center services in more than 25 countries in North America, Europe and Asia.

Several major reservation centers for Hyatt, Marriott, Westin, Radisson and Omni hotels operate in Omaha, providing thousands of jobs.
